Day 5 of 31 days of horror: Hellraiser (1987)

Andy Robinson and Doug Bradley

I was scrolling my Facebook feed this morning and came across this lovely picture of current day Doug Bradley and Andy Robinson and decided today is Hellraiser day. And because there is a new Hellraiser coming out on Hulu on Oct 7, Friday might also be Hellraiser day. Because it looks amazing. We’ll see. This was on my list, as are a few others featuring Star Trek actors. I love Star Trek and horror, and I love crossovers!

We’ll tear your soul apart.

Hellraiser, of course, is not a Star Trek/horror crossover. It’s an adaptation of the Clive Barker novella, The Hellbound Heart. Whether it’s an accurate adaptation or not, I couldn’t tell ya. I haven’t actually read it (adds to tbr). But it’s a damn good movie.

The imagery attacks your senses right from the start. Dirty fingernails. Sweat glistening in the candlelight. The hooks in the skin and pieces of flesh don’t look super realistic, but the special effects are pretty good for its time. We see a mess that was once a person. We see cenobites.

And then we meet Larry and Julia. I could sit here and describe the whole movie as I watch, but I’m not going to do that. I’ll just say that it’s great and if you haven’t seen it yet, what are you waiting for?! Hellraiser is a classic for good reason. The special effects may not be impressive by today’s standards, they are pretty on point. The gore is sticky and wet and oozing. The score fits perfectly. The sound effects make all the right enhancements to the visual effects. Each time I watch this movie is as good as the last.
