Day 3 of 31 days of horror: Uzumaki (2002)

Uzumaki was one of my favorite reads in September, which surprised me because I don’t read a lot of manga. It’s just not my style. I’d seen it recommended in Books of Horror so often that I finally took the plunge and bought it and two others by Junji Ito. And I loved it. It was weird and wonderful, and the art so beautiful one could get lost in the uzumaki.

The movie, however, is not giving me the same feeling. Not even close. There are big parts of the story missing. I suppose that makes sense though. Some stuff has to be cut to make it movie length. It feels like important stuff though. It is missing most of what I felt were the best parts. I don’t know, I expected suspense and weirdness and the movie is just boring. It is a poor representation of the manga.

If you’ve read and loved the manga, I’d give this movie a pass. If you haven’t read it, I’d still give it a pass. It’s super boring, and just when it’s starting to get interesting, it’s over. Read the manga instead.
